Hand Made Manuka Soap
Our soap is made by a method called "cold process" The finest tallow is combined with water and sodium hydroxide (the alkali). This mixture is stirred for hours until it "traces" or thickens. At this point Manuka Oil is added.
The mixture is then poured into a large mold, and left to rest for 24 hours. During this time the mix heats up, then cools down again. When it has cooled completely, saponification has taken place and the soap is no longer caustic or harsh.
During saponification a by-product called glycerin is formed. The glycerin is so valuable as a skin care product
that commerical soap makers skim the glycerin from their soap and market it as a by-product. Hand crafted soap still contains this glycerin for the benefit of your skin.
